Socially Speaking: Summer's Final Hoorah

It’s always a sad day when Labor Day hits. Where has summer gone? Can it really be September already? The sad truth – yes, it’s September and yes, it’s fall. Have no worries. September is filled with exciting things happening and traffic, tourists, and unexpected waits won’t cause any drama. Hooray for Autumn on the Eastern Shore. Socially Speaking, enjoy this 3-day weekend and partake in some of these fun events…

Labor Day Weekend Arts & Crafts Festival

The Labor Day Weekend Arts & Crafts Festival takes place at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center, 40th Street and the bay in Ocean City, this weekend. On Saturday, September 1st, a tasteful mix of mediums will be presented and for sale. Items available include oil and watercolors, woodworking and furniture, stained glass, glass art, candles, pottery, and more. Admission is free and the even runs from 10 am – 5 pm daily.
 

End of Summer Bash

The community of Ocean Pines will have an end of summer bash on Saturday, September 1st. Admission is free for everyone and music by Jimmy Charles and the Cumberland Road will entertain. Feel free to bring your own beverages and a lawn chair. There will be face painting and children’s activities. Refreshments will be for sale at the event. The event is located in White Horse Park inside of North Ocean Pines. The End of Summer Bash begins at 4 pm and ends at 8.
 

Beach Lights Spectacular

The last firework and laser light show on North Division Street takes place this weekend! Free shows take place on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend at 9:30, 10, and 10:30 pm. The Beach Lights Spectacular show features laser lights displayed on a giant 5-story beach ball, choreographed to music. This event is free. For more information, visit OC Beach Lights.
 

Fireworks at Seacrets

Seacrets, Jamaica USA, will be celebrating Labor Day on Sunday, September 2nd by launching fireworks over the bay at 49th Street in Ocean City. Families are allowed to gather on the establishments ‘lower beach’ and dining areas to view the fireworks. The show starts at dark; approximately 9 or 9:30 pm.
 

Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral

On Monday, September 3rd, beginning at the north end of the Bethany Beach boardwalk, a ‘funeral march’ will take place. The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral is composed of a procession of mourners that will carry a casket with a mannequin inside. The mannequin represents the summer of 2012. This symbolic event occurs annual and is simply meant to be sarcastic in nature. The march ends at the Bethany Beach bandstand. The event starts at 5 pm and is free.
