Sultana Projects Down Rigging Weekend: Tour, Sail, Trick-or-Treat and More, on a Fleet of Historic Tall Ships

Along the horizon, seeming to float across the surface of the water is a ship that conjures up reminders of the Chesapeake’s notorious and vibrant past—a past populated by pirates, merchant vessels, and tales of the Revolutionary War. The Schooner Sultana, with its vast sails is reminiscent of the vibrant maritime history of not only the Chesapeake, but the entire coastal region of the Delmarva Peninsula.  This weekend, the Sultana, and other Tall Ships like her will be...READ POST.

Socially Speaking: Frightful Halloween Fun on the Shore

Trick-or-treat; give me something good to eat. If you don’t, I don’t care. I’m going to the shore to get a scare. Lots to do. Lots to wear. My costume requires that I wear fake hair. Pumpkin carving, hayrides, too. Halloween is best by the Atlantic blue. Halloween on the Eastern Shore is unlike Halloween anywhere else. If you’re celebrating this scary holiday on the coast this weekend, here is a break-down of haunted happening and social suggestions…...READ POST.

The Seemingly Endless Search for a Bald Cypress

Posted by Shorebread | Thursday, October 27, 2011
My favorite bicycle is a peach-painted, wicker basket donning, single speed cruiser. When it comes to bike riding-- living on a peninsula that is extremely flat is definitely an advantage. The Delmarva coast provides a great network of flat, rural, and lightly trafficked roads that lead to beautiful sights. When I’m feeling extra ambitious, I’ll break out my real bicycle – the one with more than a single gear and real brakes, as opposed to back-peddle brakes that suffice for...READ POST.

A Lucky Girl's Life: There is a Magic Wand for Beauty

Yes, this really is a "magical wand," perfect for dry, mature, sensitive and even congested skin. Kansa was first made during the Bronze Age approximately 5,000 years ago. “I refuse to be afraid. When terror comes, I won’t be swayed. Finding the Positive: Audrey Killen and Operation Shooting Star

Even after a full week of work, things at the Humphreys House look as if little progress was made. That sures up the structure to move forward.   The back stairwell is now open quite a bit more than originally planned. Rebuilding Berlin: In Honor of Our Champion Mr. Hammond

Posted by Shorebread | Tuesday, September 06, 2011
Progress has been made this week in the renovation of the Humphreys House, but there was yet another setback. Mr. Ed Hammond, our champion in helping us to get the home, died in a tragic car accident this past week. The Town of Berlin will be sorely missing an amazing man, who did much for the town and those who lived and worked here. I was struck with an empty feeling when I heard the news, as we were so looking forward to sharing the completion of the renovations with Mr. Hammond. At his...READ POST.

Planning Takes a Backseat: Re-Birth of the Humphreys House in Berlin, MD

We had an uninvited visitor storm into the area this weekend, going by the name of Irene. She put a damper on some of the planning and work to be done on the renovation of the Humphreys House. Now, this home being over 100 years old has seen its share of hurricanes and has lived through them, but being a new owner I was nervous that the sustained winds that were supposed to come with the storm would knock an old tree down onto the home, or worse.  The Dew Tour was in town this past weekend, if you hadn't noticed the huge vert ramp and stands constructed on the beach in downtown Ocean City, MD. As a beach town, we are already familiarized with the surf & skate lifestyle, but we were inundated with athletes and fans alike riding their bikes and boards. The construction started the week before the event began, with this year being the first Dew Tour stop to host a Skateboard Bowl competition. Amazingly this skateboard bowl,...READ POST.

Dirty Reggae Comes to Ocean City MD

Posted by Shorebread | Tuesday, July 26, 2011
I remember the day I was exposed to Ska, an infectiously fun style of music that makes you move. Back in the 90's during college, going to see The Toasters, Reel Big Fish, Spring Heeled Jack and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were influential shows in my life. More recently I have come to appreciate reggae, as many of the beach bars locally have reggae bands perform. So it's only natural that I would love The Aggrolites, as they are a blend of ska and reggae. The band formed almost a decade ago in...READ POST.

Lord of the Fries

Local Challenge Tuesday - Joy of Gardening

Posted by Shorebread | Thursday, June 30, 2011
We planted a very small garden of our own this year, using heirloom plants that we bought from the Good Farm's plant sale this spring. Lemon basil, 2 types of heirloom tomatos, white cucumber, and some type of melon. They have made it through this dry spring, and are currently thriving. Spent the weekend weeding and watering, and that is such a good feeling! I never thought that gardening could be so meditative. Getting the dirt under your nails, and sweating as much as I did, changed my...READ POST.
